Last month was the Olympics…or as we Aussies call it, the ‘lympics.
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love watching the ‘lympics. As someone who has two left feet and no athletic ability, it constantly amazes me how talented each and every participant is. Just making the team is amazing and I am in awe of the athletes.
Watching the ‘lympics had me thinking about the all the hard work and sacrifice these elite athletes have made to follow their dreams. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that we do not see. Sacrifice not only from the athlete but also from their key support people, usually their parents. We see only the glory and the world records.
I thought about my creating Red Fern Lingerie. There were many years of hard work, late nights and early mornings, failures (you should see some of the samples), learning….learning a completely new and unknown industry, learning about fabrics, learning about design and patternmaking, learning about manufacture and production, learning about business and learning about myself…..and this was all before I officially launched the brand!
Yet, despite the hard work, sacrifice and tears, I continue working on my brand. Why? I want Red Fern Lingerie to be the GOLD in mastectomy lingerie and I know in the core of my soul it will be. I truly believe that my sister survivors deserve to have a real choice when they shop for their lingerie, a choice that is modern, stylish, fashionable and sexy. I also believe that lingerie can be a part of the process of healing and reconnecting with our body.
So am I an Olympian? Not in the official dictionary definition. I don’t have athletic ability and the closest I have been to an Olympic event was Sydney 2000. Yet, I do understand and appreciate the dedication, sacrifice, fails, success and support it takes to be the best and that is what I am striving for…to be the best in mastectomy lingerie.
